Our steamer trunk captures the golden age of travel when trunks were designed to fit under the bunk of a steamship cabin.
Makes a great storage chest for clothing, blankets, and keepsakes. An optional inside tray keeps smaller items within easy reach. We'll also give you some tips for lining the case with cedar to protect against moths.
We chose 3/4" oak plywood to ensure a sturdy case, and used splined miter joinery to hide the plywood edges. The lid calls for a lighter 1/4" plywood, making the trunk lid easy to open. Overall dimensions: 36 1/2" W x 20 1/2"D x 16 1/8"H. This project originally appeared in Woodsmith magazine No. 73.
